Learn Korean Dialects – Different Ways to Say “Have You Eaten?” 🍚

Many Korean learners know 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo) as the standard way to say “hello.” But in everyday Korean culture, people often greet each other by asking about meals. Saying  먹었어요?” (Have you eaten?) can function just like saying “Hello” or “How are you?”

This type of greeting can also change depending on the region because Korea has many unique dialects (사투리). Let’s look at a few interesting examples from different parts of Korea.

🍚 1. Standard Korean – 먹었어요?

In standard Korean,  먹었어요? literally means “Have you eaten?” but it’s also used as a friendly greeting.

Mini phrase

먹었어요?
bap meogeosseoyo
→ Have you eaten?

🌊 2. Busan / Gyeongsang Dialect – 묵었나?

In Busan and the Gyeongsang region, 먹다 (to eat) often changes to 묵다 in dialect. The sentence ending also changes, creating a very distinctive regional sound.

Mini phrase

묵었나?
bap mugeonna
→ Have you eaten?

🏝️ 3. Jeju Dialect – 먹언?

The Jeju dialect is quite different from standard Korean and sometimes sounds almost like a different language. One simple greeting is  먹언?

Mini phrase

먹언?
bap meogeon
→ Have you eaten?

💬 A Cultural Tip

In Korean culture, asking about food is a way of showing care and friendliness. Even if someone is not literally asking about your meal,  먹었어요?” can feel similar to saying “How are you?”

Learning small dialect differences like 묵었나 or 먹언 can also make conversations more fun when traveling around Korea.
