“Geonbae!” – Discover Korean Drinks While Learning the Language

If you’ve ever watched a Korean drama or visited Korea, you’ve probably heard people say 건배!” (Geonbae) before taking a sip of their drink. It simply means “Cheers!”, but in Korea it’s also a moment of connection, laughter, and friendship.

At My Korean School, we believe culture makes language learning more fun. So today, let’s raise a glass and explore three of Korea’s most popular drinks while learning some useful Korean expressions.

Ready? 건배! 🍻

🥃 1. Soju (소주) – Korea’s Iconic Drink

Soju is the most famous alcoholic drink in Korea. You’ll often see it on tables at Korean BBQ restaurants, late-night eateries, or gatherings with friends.

Fun Cultural Tip
In Korea, it’s polite to pour drinks for others instead of pouring your own.

Useful Korean Words

·       소주 – soju

·       – a glass / a drink

·       건배 – cheers

Example Expression
소주 할까요?
(Shall we have a drink of soju?)

When the glasses are ready, people say:
건배!

🍚 2. Makgeolli (막걸리) – Korea’s Traditional Rice Drink

Makgeolli is a traditional Korean rice wine with a slightly sweet and tangy taste. It has a milky white color and is often served in bowls instead of glasses.

Many Koreans enjoy makgeolli with Korean pancakes (파전), especially on rainy days.

Vocabulary

·       막걸리 – makgeolli

·       파전 – green onion pancake

·       전통 – traditional alcohol

Example Sentence
막걸리랑 파전을 먹어요.
(I have makgeolli with Korean pancakes.)

🍺 3. Korean Beer (맥주) – The Famous “Chimaek” Combo

Beer is very popular in Korea, especially with fried chicken. This famous combination is called 치맥 (chimaek) — a mix of the words 치킨 (chicken) and 맥주 (beer).

People often enjoy chimaek while watching sports, hanging out with friends, or relaxing after a long day.

Useful Words

·       맥주 – beer

·       치킨 – chicken

·       친구 – friend

Example Sentence
친구랑 치맥을 먹어요.

Food, drinks, and culture are all part of learning Korean.
